British Columbia owners work inside two calendars at once. On the southwest coast, winters are mild and wet; in the Interior and the North, the cold season is longer and harder. Doin.ca coaches BC owners in person, by video call or by phone, helping you set weekly commitments that fit the season you're actually in rather than the one you hoped for.
Our home base is Vancouver, so BC is where we know the rhythm of business best. More importantly, it means we understand why a December in Burnaby and a December in Prince George are completely different weeks.
The owners we coach in BC
Most BC businesses we hear from are small, owner-led and stretched. The province's largest municipalities by population include Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby and Richmond, followed by Abbotsford, Coquitlam, Kelowna and Saanich.
That spread creates three common situations:
- Lower Mainland owners compete in crowded markets, where slow follow-up on quotes or calls quietly loses work to the next business in the search results.
- Fraser Valley and Okanagan owners often run businesses with strong seasonal swings and a mix of local and visiting customers.
- Island and northern owners work in smaller communities, where reputation travels fast and a missed promise is noticed.
In all three, the problem we see most is the same: the owner is the bottleneck, and the plan waits behind the daily work.
How BC seasons shape your commitments
A good action plan respects your busy season. On the coast, wet months can bring more indoor and repair work; in the Interior, deep cold and snow change the work entirely.
Some practical patterns:
- Coastal service businesses usually have room for project commitments in late spring and summer.
- Interior and northern businesses often need to finish planning and admin projects before the first hard freeze.
- Outdoor and construction-related businesses may flip that completely, with winter as the time for hiring, pricing and systems work.
We map your busy and quiet months at the start, then size each six-week action plan to match.
Registries and regulators worth bookmarking
We link these because owners' commitments often touch them. We don't give legal or compliance advice; confirm details with each office.
- BC Registries and Online Services handles business names and registrations. Useful when "register the new trade name" finally makes it onto the list.
- WorkSafeBC is the province's workers' compensation board. If your plan includes a first hire, it belongs on the same commitment page.
- Consumer Protection BC oversees consumer protection matters for certain sectors. Worth checking before you change how an offer or contract is worded.
Dated deadlines for home-service owners
Program dates make excellent commitments because they don't move. If you run a heating, renovation or energy-related business in BC, one program is worth watching.
As of October 2026, the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program brought in new requirements for invoices dated 2026-07-06 or later, with some rebates removed and eligibility narrowed for certain upgrades. If your customer materials still describe the old rules, updating them is a clear, dated commitment. Confirm current terms with the program before you change anything.
A first six weeks for a BC owner
Here's what a starting plan might look like for a hypothetical Lower Mainland service business with five staff:
- ☐ Week 1: list every open quote older than 14 days
- ☐ Week 2: call or text the ten largest open quotes
- ☐ Week 3: block two mornings a week as owner hours, phones to a team member
- ☐ Week 4: draft the job ad for the role you've been putting off
- ☐ Week 5: review last winter's busiest weeks and note what broke
- ☐ Week 6: write three changes to make before this winter's rush
Each line is small enough to finish inside a normal week. The weekly check-in is where we see whether it did.

Frequently asked questions
You're based in Vancouver. Can we meet in person?
Yes. Coaching happens in person or by video call, as well as by phone, text and email. Either way we keep check-ins short, punctual and easy to fit into a working day.
My busy season is the wet winter. When should I plan big projects?
Usually in late spring and summer, when coastal service calls tend to ease. We'd load the six-week action plans for those months with the heavier projects and keep winter lists short.
Do you help with BC business registration?
We don't file anything or give legal advice. If a commitment involves registering a name or changing your structure, we'll link you to BC Registries and Online Services and make sure the step actually gets done.
